Ashley Meets Vegetables

I'm back on track eating healthy again!

Loading my plate with all kinds of veggie goodness
(shrimp and vegetable curry)

 (Salads)

 (stir fry)

The best way to get tasty veggies for little money
is the Whole Foods buffet

$5 for all this!

Confession

Confession:
I haven't worked out in 3 weeks

this has left me severely behind in my training
for the 1/2 marathon
that is taking place 4 weeks from now!

So today I ran a measly 5 miles
which is 3 miles behind schedule

Looks like there will be a lot of walking this time around

oh well.

I'm really only interested in seeing this face anyway.

What's your dream?

Just like guy in Pretty Woman
I want to know
What's your dream?

They say that you should do what you love.
But for the life of me I can't figure out how to make money
eating cheese and drinking wine

So here's what I'm thinking...
I'm going to break out on my own
and create something for all those like me
who do not know what to be when they grow up
(after all 40 is the new grown up- so I still have time)

My creation will be a machine
where you can type in all of your likes
which it will use to
compute/calculate/create
and spit out
the career of your dreams
(much like Conky's word of the day)

My likes would include the following:
dogs
wine
cheese
pita chips
movies
blogging
spinning
napping
reading
dancing
traveling
The Bachelor

What do you think? Is my invention Shark Tank material?

What words would you use for the Career Machine?

This week

This week I would like to kick my coffee habit
by replacing it with tea

Why? because I cannot drink coffee without sugar- but I can drink tea without sugar
the truth is
I like tea
but some habits are hard to break
wish me luck...

Happy New Year!

They say that by Feb. 1st most people have already given up on their New Year's Resolutions.
To avoid that, I decided to be wickedly clever and make Feb. 1st my New Year instead.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Time to look back on last year's accomplishments
and make plans for 2011 domination.

Highlights from last year include:

Bucket List: Seattle

Bucket List: Rock (wall)climbing

Bucket List: visit Napa Valley

Bucket List: Go snow skiing

Ran my first 10K

Ran my 1st 1/2 marathon

Stopped eating anything with legs

Last year was an incredible year for me. I've never felt happier or healthier.

While I still plan on maintaining my fitness and healthy eating habits-
My 2011 goals are more on the spiritual/personal growth side.

Some of my 2011 goals include:
  • Adding and crossing more items off my bucket list.
  • Joining Toastmasters.
  • Getting more involved in my local Buddhist community.
  • Doing 3 random acts of kindness for friends, loved ones, coworkers and strangers a month.
  • Yoga, yoga and more yoga!  (time to get flexible)
  • Spend more time with friends and family.
  • Write more.
  • Blog more!
  • Meditate daily.
  • Give up coffee.
  • Go all out to celebrate every holiday. (Be sure to check out my Valentine's Day checklist)
  • Visit my far away friends.
  • Find an art project.
  • Let my dogs be dogs (this one is hard for me- can't let go of the leash!)

I can't wait to share this year with all of my readers. If you have advice on any of these items please let me know!

How is everyone else doing on their New Year's resolutions?

Guess who's back? Back again?

Being the good blogger I am, I decided not to post the fact that I was going on vacation. We left on the 23rd and got back yesterday.

Abbie and I had an amazing vacation...
but as Dorothy would say

There's no place like home

Instead of trying to cram my vacation into one blog post- I'll stretch it out instead.

Beginning with another item being removed from the Bucket List

Last week I went snow skiing for the first time.

Being a Florida girl
the only skiing I know is of the water variety
(I was on the water ski team in college)
I thought maybe those skills would come in handy for snow skiing
but it didn't
let it be known-
skiing is H.A.R.D!

You wouldn't think this with all the 5 year olds whizzing by you- but don't let those fearless bastards fool you. Skiing kicked my ass.

I started out with Abbie teaching me on a side hill.

For whatever reason they don't think you should use poles your first time around so I wasn't given any. Thing is- (unless you are 3ft tall)- it is nearly impossible to get up from a fall without poles.
For me this was the hardest part. It was absolutely exhausting trying to get up on my own, in deep snow, with a pair of skis strapped to my feet.

After an hour of "making a pizza" I met up with the beginners group Abbie signed me up for.
I was the oldest one in the 4 person group - by 20 years.

Once I got over the fact that I was the only non-parent on the bunny hill, I went to work.

In the end I finally started getting the hang of it.
stopped falling
and began to zig zag a bit.

Abbie is an amazing skier so we'll probably be doing this again. He was incredibly supportive even after I begged and begged to just let me sit in the lodge and drink hot chocolate instead.
(god bless him and his patience)

I wanna Rock and Roll all night...

Sunday was the VA Beach Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon
I ROCKED that bish!
werd.

My goal was to finish in 2:30
I ran it in 2:28:57
BOOM!

I actually felt really great running
The course was beautiful- especially the run on the boardwalk the last mile of the race.
The weather was
PERFECT
When it isn't 99 degrees outside- you can really appreciate running a lot more

(notice my face isn't as red)

My only problem occurred after the race
I took some medicine that I didn't realize would dehydrate me
as soon as I crossed the finish line I felt awful

I couldn't eat
I didn't want to drink
My stomach hurt so bad
All I did was sleep the rest of the day
At one point I was really concerned that I would have to go to the hospital

So
Lesson learned.
No new medications before a run.

On a happy note...
Abbie
my super awesome boyfriend whom I love more than anything
surprised me with my very own Garmin!
It was great knowing my pace/mileage/time during the race

is he the best or what?

Abbie, by the way, ran the half in under 2 hours
with practically zero training
amazing.

One more thing off MY BUCKET LIST!
But
I decided to add a full marathon to the list now.

More about my weekend tomorrow

Double Digits

Did you hear?
I ran 10 miles yesterday

That's right- double digits baby!

Occupants of my household agree

this feat has launched me into Alpha status

I am SO ready for this race
except mother nature might have other plans...

To be continued...

The tropics are HOT!

Anytime it’s hot outside I say (either out loud or to myself)
The tropics are HOT!
Abbie never knows what I'm referring to - so last night  I had to show him

Behold: the best episode of 3-2-1 Contact ever:

This obviously led to an hour of looking up 80s cartoon theme songs
My favorites:

With all the childhood nasalsia, I decided to make some Instabake Almond Butter Cookies.

Do we know how to party or what?

On the fitness front
Had a annoying run yesterday
Never mind that it was 100 degrees outside
(The tropics are HOT!)
But my stupid Nike+ didn’t calculate my run correctly. So what I thought was 4 miles was only 3.5.
I have to figure out how to calibrate it.
I bought it online and really think I've just purchased a dud.

Last month my friend started a “Fitness Challenge” where she challenged her friends to workout 6 days a week for the month of May.  That is my new goal for the month of June.
After all… it is swimsuit time.

Yesterday’s Eats:
  • Bfast- ww mini bagel with little cheese, veggie sausage, 2 egg whites, handful of cherries, tea
  • Snack- Lara Bar, espresso
  • Lunch- ww Arnold thin, 3 cuke slices, hummus, turkey, handful of cherries
  • Snack- 3 handfuls of WW OG pretzels
  • Dinner- Tilapia, green beans with butter
  • Dessert-2  ww almond butter cookies (loaded)
  • Fruit/Veggie: 4
  • Workout- 3.5 mile run

Less Space, less stuff, more life

Less space, less stuff, more life.

Our internet was down all day at work today which left me with next to nothing to do. So… since I was alone, I may have decided to watch TV (while still working I swear)…. and I may have decided to check out today’s episode of Oprah.

It showcased how people live in other countries. Demark, is apparently known as having the happiest people on earth.  The homes in Demark are real modern, clean lines, small rooms. No knickknacks (which I hate more than anything) and little wall art.   When Oprah asked the husband why so little “stuff” he said “less space, less stuff, more life”

I love it.

This is very much in line with Buddhist beliefs. Maybe I should add this to my resolutions
.
Beyond the clutter- that just seems to only be endlessly cleaned and maintained. Having less stuff would also mean having more money. More money means more travel. And that my friends, is what I want more than anything.

Raise your hand if you are ready for the weekend...

yeah. me too.

Today's Eats:

  • bfast- 1 egg, ww english muffin, apple sauce
    • coffee
  • Snack #1- Green Monster and PB Puffins
  • Lunch- turkey sammie with hummus and sprouts
    • greek yogurt with granola
  • Snack #2- apple
  • Snack #2.5- spoonful of almond butter and handful of snap peas
  • Dinner: Left over taco surprise (black beans, salsa, diced tomatoes with taco seasoning) and 12 crackers (could have done without the crackers
  • Fruit/Veggie count: 6
  • Workout: 20 min. shred.

Working on my Fit-ness

It seems like yesterday was the day for goals out in blog world! I was inspired enough to create some on my own. Unfortunately I ran out of time yesterday (how does that keep happening?) so i wasn't able to completely make out my new fitness routine- but after some thought- I've come up with the following goals for December:

  • No more weight machines at the gym - I have been using the same weight machines since college. I think i fall back on them because I know what to set them on and how to use them. I am sure my body is tired of this- so for this month I am doing free weights, stability balls, kettles, bands and more instead.

  • Running- I've tried to run over and over again. I want so badly to be a runner so this month I am going to try again. Abbie and I are going to find a 5k to run in this month to help with motivation.

  • Spinning- I  LOVE spin class- not sure why I haven't been in awhile- so I'll be starting that again.
  • Home workouts- I want to incorporate 1-2 home workouts a week (I love being home). I'm going to do some research on popular yoga DVDs (I hate the ones I have) and I also want to get a stability ball workout video to learn more moves and just to do something different.

So now I hope to get to an actual schedule written out - as in a calendar.

Looks like I'll be searching fitness sites tonight for new workouts!

Today's Eats

  • bfast- oats with egg whites, almond butter, 1 banana
  • Snack #1- coffee
    • green monster
  • Lunch- arnold thin, turkey, cheese and hummus
    • cucumber
  • Snack #2- apple
  • Dinner- salad: 1/2 cuke, 1/2 avocado, 1/2 tomato with vinegar
    • ww pasta with olive oil and garlic
  • Dessert- handful of chocolate chips
  • Fruit/Veggie count: 6 (booya!)
