Farm Living is the life for me

Reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
I was inspired to head over to the farmers marketing this morning.

I've been a couple times - before our farmers market moved indoors
now all of the sudden the Starbucks toting townsies decided they want to go as well

Needless to say I was totally overwhelmed when walking in. I made a quick round, bought my shish and made an exit.

Driving home, I made new Farmer's Market rules (effective... next Sat.):

RULE #1- Don't take the baskets- a 7 year old literally yelled at me for taking the basket that held the green beans.

RULE # 2- Take 2 not 1 $1 Publix "I love the environment" bags. Reason: I went to one stand and started loading up. They looked in the bag and told me what I owed. Then I went to the next booth and wanted to do the same routine but was afraid that I would have been charged twice (make sense?). THEN the same little girl that yelled at me also gave me a plastic (aka- I HATE the environment) bag to put my food in. Which made me look like a damn fool - posing to love Mother Earth and using the products that suffocate her at the same time

RULE #3 - Buy something new. There were radishes. They were small and in the cutest little bundles that you have ever seen. But I didn't put them in either of the I love or I hate the environment bags. Instead I drove all the way home thinking how cool it would have been to have bought them and found a recipe to them in.

RULE #4- Figure out a way to take fish home- There was a small booth with fresh fish. I wasn't sure how they would do in my 10min drive home. Next time I def want to try some.

RULE #5-  Buy Jam. Ok- this rule might only apply to next Saturday, since I only need one jar.

Here is all the loot I took home with me.

  1. eggplant
  2. 5 tomatoes
  3. 3 lemons
  4. 2 cukes
  5. 2 squashes
  6. soap
  7. green beans (no basket)
Total = $12 all locally grown.

Here come the judge

Once a guy walked up to me at Publix:

Guy:  You workout at the same gym I do
Me:
Guy: I just wanted to see if you bought healthy food
(he peeks into my cart)
Guy: Wow, you do. Wayyyy healthier than me.
He lifted up his basket so I could see the soda and frozen pizza’s he was carrying.

Fast Forward
Ever since that day I am very aware of what I put in my  grocery cart.  I play this secret game where I pretend that everyone in the store is watching what foods I’m buying. And judging me.

And every time I make it to the checkout with only healthy (or realatively healthy) items- I consider it a victory.

Consequently, this little situation got me to start looking into other people’s baskets. And yes, judging. Yesterday I saw a mother and her 10 year old boy load up their cart with 1 case of Sunkist in a can along with (2) 2 liters of Sunkist!

Here are my issues:
#1 – who the heck buys Sunkist? I mean, occasionally I may think a Sunkist would be a tastey treat- but that is like a once in blue moon type of thing. I guess I just always assumed everyone else in the free world felt the same way too.

#2- If you ARE one of those Sunkist drinking people/family HOW MUCH DO YOU POSSIBLY NEED!? 24 cans AND 2 liters?!

#3- I’m not a mom, but even I know that buying that much soda for your kid ranks up there with buying him cigarettes and booze.

Who am I to judge? It wasn't too long ago that my morning breakfast consisted of Mt. Dew and Doritos. (mmmm ... doritos)

Holy Hangover Batman!

From now on I am only having two drinks max! I know everyone says this after a night of binge drinking. But today I felt so absolutely awful! To make things worse my days eats are as follows:

  • bfast- not one, but 2 grilled cheese sandwiches
  • lunch- big bowl of left over chili with a row (yes- a whole stinkin' row) of crackers
  • dinner- mix of healthy yummies from Whole Foods
I spent the whole day in bed- what a waste.

**** moving on.....

I am so happy to have Abbie aboard my healthy eating quest. He decided to check out Whole Foods thinking we would do our shopping there. Unfortunately it was simply too much $$$ for us and we ended up abandoning our cart and high tailed it back to Publix.

Every week I write out a grocery list (or else I will forget everything). I like to plan out all of my meals ahead of time and purchase accordantly. Here is this week's list:
